Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate health promotion behaviors (HPB) and the influence of mothers employment on the HPB of lower grade primary school students,
Methods: The participants were 489 students (304 with employed mothers and 185 with unemployed mothers) in P city, Data were collected with HPM questionnaire on personal hygiene (7 items), eating habits (7 items), exercise (5 items), interest in their own health (3 items), and mental health (3 items), and analyzed with t tests and x2 test at .05 of significant level.
Results: Mean HPB score 2.68 (out of 5) for students with employed mothers and 2.90 for students with unemployed mothers, which was significant different (t=-6.94, p<.001). There was a significant difference in eating habits by mother`s employment (employed 1.93vs non-employed 2.42; t=-1 1.59, p< .001), ``interest in their own health`` (employed 2.67vs non-employed 3.05; t=-6.34, p`<.00l), and ``personal hygiene`` (employed 3.04vs non-employed 3.23; t=-3.27, p=.001).
Conclusion: Mothers employment can influence the lower grade primary school student`s health promotion behaviors. Further studies are needed after controlling the confounding factors such as socio-economic status, parent`s attitude toward job and child-care, and presence of alternative manpower to take care of children for employed mothers.
